There's a good chance you're all too familiar with the term "burnout." Whether you're trying to launch a new product, grow your company, or simply keep up with the day-to-day demands of running a business, it's easy to get overwhelmed and burnt out. But what exactly is burnout? And more importantly, how can you avoid it?

Burnout is a state of complete exhaustion - physically, emotionally, and mentally. The condition is caused by excessive and prolonged stress. If left unchecked, burnout can lead to serious health problems like depression, anxiety, and even heart disease. So it's important to be able to recognize the signs of burnout and take steps to avoid it as best as possible.

Signs of Burnout
There are a few key signs that you're heading for burnout. If you're feeling any of the following, it's time to take a step back and reevaluate your priorities:

1. Exhaustion: If you're feeling completely drained—mentally, emotionally, and physically—it's a sign that you're approaching burnout. At this point, even simple tasks can feel insurmountable.

2. Disengagement: If you're feeling detached from your work or like you just don't care anymore. This is often accompanied by feelings of apathy or cynicism.

3. Reduced productivity:
When you're burnt out, it's harder to focus and be productive. You might find yourself procrastinating more or taking longer to complete tasks than usual.

4. Increased sick days: When your body is under constant stress, it becomes weaker and more susceptible to illness.

5. Changes in sleeping or eating habits: You might find yourself either sleeping too much or not being able to sleep at all. And you might either lose your appetite or find yourself overeating as a way to cope with the stress.

Of course, these symptoms could be a sign of illness and you should consult your doctor for medical advice.

Avoiding Burnout
Now that we've gone over some of the signs of burnout, let's talk about how you can avoid it. Here are a few tips:

1. Set realistic goals: When you're setting goals—for yourself or your team—it's important to make sure they're realistic. Trying to do too much in too little time is a recipe for disaster and will only increase your stress levels.

2. Take breaks: It might seem counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to avoid burnout is to take breaks throughout the day—even if they're just 5-10 minutes long. Step away from your desk, take a walk outside, do some deep breathing exercises…whatever helps you clear your mind and recharge your batteries.

3. Delegate: Delegating tasks, whether it's hiring an assistant or outsourcing some of your workload, can help lighten your load and reduce your stress levels significantly.

4. Prioritize self-care: When you're busy trying to grow your business, it's easy to let other aspects of your life fall by the wayside—but that's not sustainable in the long run. Make sure to schedule time for things like exercise, healthy eating, relaxation, and spending time with loved ones. Taking care of yourself will help reduce stress levels and make it easier to handle whatever comes your way.

Burnout doesn't have to be inevitable. Stay mindful of the signs, set realistic goals, and take care of yourself both mentally and physically. A powerful tool to keep your stress levels in check is your calendar. Learn how to use it to its full potential with our Time Management Course!
